Have you seen these funky colourful cubes around the university yet? The blue and red ones that have different word creations with the syllable ‘co’ written on them? Have you wondered what they are? Well, the wait is over – co·lab is officially starting this week and you are invited to join in!

co·lab – short for creative opportunities laboratory – is the University’s very own pop-up makerspace. Students and staff alike have the opportunity to go in and just make something – no complicated plan or expertise required. The space is filled to the brim with exciting technology and tools, such as a 3D printer and a laser cutter. CENSIS is bringing in different sensors and WiFi technologies that are ideal to be at the heart of smart technologies. All it needs are people to come in and embark on making something. The space is a pilot project which will pave the way to a potential permanent makerspace within UofG. For two weeks, you have the chance to try technology that only a decade ago was off-limits to everyday people. A variety of workshops will run throughout the week, including sessions on Glasgow makers, using virtual reality for physical rehabilitation or cardboard furniture building.

As exciting as this sounds, you might think: Oh no, not another distraction! But making something and letting your creative juices flow is not a distraction (necessarily). It can actually help you with your well-being and your PhD. One of the great advantages of makerspaces is the freedom to fail. No one will grade you on what you’re making and no one will judge you. On the contrary, other makers will be around to share their skills and help you out. Everyone is equal in a makerspace. It’s about meeting others, exchanging ideas and thinking outside the box. Above all, it’s a great break from your desk-based PhD work during which you sometimes wonder: what have I actually done today? Making something with your own two hands can be incredibly satisfying and will give you a great feeling of accomplishment.

Enough of the words, it’s time to go check it out! You can find co·lab from 30th Oct to 10th Nov on Southpark Avenue between the Fraser Building and the McMillan Reading Room.
