PG Fortnight at The Gilchrist

The Gilchrist is one of our favourite places on campus. In this guest post, Support Services Administrator for the Student Representative Council (SRC), Markee Rambo-Hood shares all you need to know about the Gilchrist, as well as what you can expect for the 2017 Postgraduate Welcome Fortnight. In her current position, Markee is responsible for looking after the Gilchrist PG Club and creating a social environment for PG students.  She also helps to facilitate the day-to-day running of the admin office at the SRC.  In addition to this, she is a professional performer and events planner within the Glasgow cabaret scene.

The 2017 Postgraduate Welcome Fortnight will be taking place the 11th-22nd of September.  If you are new to the University of Glasgow, or new to doing a postgraduate degree then this fortnight is for you. I’m currently putting together an exciting line-up of events, which will hopefully appeal to a wide range of students.

The club was named after Marion Gilchrist, the first female graduate of the University of Glasgow, and the first woman to obtain a medical degree in Scotland. In recognition of her achievements, the club hopes to bring together postgraduates from all schools and all backgrounds, creating a cross-college mix in which postgraduates can interact with one another.

The Gilchrist is the only social space designed for all postgraduates on campus, and if you are registered as a postgraduate then you are already a member.  The club has both social and study spaces, with a café serving hot and cold food, as well as barista coffee and a wide section of alcoholic beverages, individual study booths and a seminar room. The seminar room can be booked for free by postgraduates and is great for seminars, meetings, presentations, workshops, film screenings and much more. If you have an event you would like to host at the Gilchrist, then please get in touch.

Last year’s Welcome Fortnight was a great success, and I’m bringing back everyone’s favourites in addition to some new events.  I’m really excited to have JazzCo play for our live music night, we’ve had them in over the summer and they are outstanding.  We are also having our Drag 101 again, a night run especially for the Gilchrist by drag queens Alana Duvey and Dharma Geddo.  We are also having a Whisky tasting and Gin tasting, run by the QMU Whisky Club and the Gin Society.  Our regular pub quiz will be starting again as well, which offers a cash prize! If that's not enough, the German Society will be running their hugely popular Oktoberfest (with plenty of German Beer and Pretzels) and we are running our Murder Mystery event again, with the company “Spirit of Glasgow”.  All of their murder mysteries are based on actual unsolved murders, and you get a free drink included in your ticket price. These are just some of the events that will be taking place to look forward to-and there are a whole lot more in the works! Make sure to keep an eye on our website or our Facebook page for more information. If there is anything you’d love to have in the Gilchrist, please comment below and I’ll see what I can do.

What a fantastic line up! Perhaps you're starting your UofG PGR journey in September? Or are you a Gilchrist regular with a favourite event you'd like to recommend? As ever, let us know in the comments below, and don't forget you can also tweet to us @UofG_PGRblog, and The Gilchrist, @TheGilchristPG.
