PhD Procrastination: Piled Higher and Deeper

We had the pleasure of hosting Jorge Cham, inventor of Piled Higher and Deeper, also known as PHD Comics on Tuesday 3rd November 2015 in the Sir Charles Wilson building. Jorge talked us through his experiences as a PhD student and how he started to create the comics. It was a fantastic talk that highlighted the varied paths that people go down following their research degrees. Jorge graciously followed his talk up with a book signing session, before attendees got to watch The PHD Movie 2, a comedic romp through the ups and downs of PhD research, helping us to see the funny side of our natural propensity for procrastination: it seems that without the pressure of a looming deadline, we’ll do just about anything to avoid writing. Following on from the first movie released in 2011, The PHD Movie 2 tracks the lives of postgraduate students as they try to cope with the demands of graduate school. Roles in the movies are played by real-life research student and staff at UCLA.

Stallholders on the day offered a valuable opportunity for students to recap on any induction information they missed out on in the first few weeks of term, as well as some clubs they might be interested in joining, including:

Huge thanks to all of the above, Jorge Cham and of course all attendees for making it a fun, informative event.
